NUTRITION I

Strap in! We're diving into the basics of nutrition – there will be some science, some math, but what I want to instill most is guidance for your intuition around food. This can be hard in everyday life, let alone as an athlete, but there are some simple lessons and tricks that we can practice to improve both our nutritional intake and energy output.

STRENGTH TRAINING

Build consistent, functional strength that supports running and hiking –– not just aesthetic big muscles. We’ll explore how developing deep tissue strength creates a stable foundation for movement, allowing athletes to safely build flexibility and power over time. The result is more resilient bodies, lower injury risk, and stronger performance on the trails.

EVENT PREPARATION

Preparing for a race or big adventure goes far beyond fitness alone. This session explores the physical readiness needed to show up confident and capable, while placing greater emphasis on the practical planning that makes or breaks an event. We’ll cover packing strategies, route planning, mental readiness, and how to approach the days leading up to an event so you can arrive calm, organized, and ready to perform.

BREATHE & VISUALIZE

As training intensifies and challenges arise, mental resilience becomes just as important as physical fitness. This session explores the adaptability required to move through tough moments — whether pushing new distances, chasing faster speeds, or navigating challenges beyond sport. We’ll introduce practical strategies for using breathwork and visualization to stay focused, calm, and responsive when it matters most.

AVOIDING BURNOUT

Burnout rarely hits all at once — it builds quietly through overtraining, stress, and unmet recovery needs. This session focuses on recognizing early warning signs, understanding the balance between load and recovery, and learning how to adjust training without losing momentum. We’ll explore practical strategies to protect long-term motivation, resilience, and enjoyment — both in sport and in life.

RECOVERY

Recovery is not time lost — it’s where adaptation happens. This session breaks down the difference between active and passive recovery and how each plays a role in long-term performance. We’ll explore practical ways to integrate recovery into your training, helping you absorb the work you’ve done, reduce injury risk, and stay consistent over the long run.

As Sustain Athletics, we respectfully acknowledge that we are guests on lands that have long been stewarded by Indigenous Peoples, many of which remain unceded. Wherever we are, we encourage our athletes to learn and listen from the native cultures of their area.

For Sustain Run Club, we enjoy the beautiful trails of the Syilx Okanagan NationOther Sustain Athletics activities are largely based on the lands of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and sÉ™lÌ“ilwÉ™taɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
